Pupdate: He got a Bailey Chair. Wait, what is a Bailey Chair you ask? Remember? Lalit is a puppy from a litter that was born here and had to stay behind while his siblings were adopted due to a birth defect called megaesophagus or MegaE for short. It's a condition that stiffens the esophagus and makes it difficult for dogs to swallow. They can't keep their food down, which can lead to vomiting or accidentally inhaling food into their lungs. While megaesophagus is common in senior dogs, it can also affect puppies as a birth defect (like it has Lalit), and can dangerously stunt their growth and impair their development. The dogs are unable to eat in a normal position and have to sit upright (like a human) in order to digest their food. The chairs can be quite costly to buy already made but my Husband jumped into action and using reclaimed pallet wood and just a few store bought supplies, built this one specifically for Lalit. He will now be able to eat on his own without having to used improvised contraptions or having to be spoon fed. We just needs to attach the feeding tray and it will be complete. I did feed him with a spoon this morning BUT, with a tray, he can eat by himself AND it will deter his want to climb out until he gets used to it.
LALIT UPDATE 06/17/2019: Lalit has been having some feeding issues so he was taken to the doctor on June 17, 2019. His update isnt great..... Lalit went to the Vet this morning and after all the tests and x-rays, he has been diagnosed with what's called Megaesophagus. It's is a generalized enlargement of the esophagus with a decreased to absent motility. Lalit's is almost completely absent so his food is not being pushed down into his stomach. For him, it's a birth defect and surgery is the only option to correct it. The foster has been given specific instructions on how and what to feed him to help it stay down for now, until a decision is reached on surgery versus no surgery. Surgery is very high risk, very expensive, but also very successful. No surgery would require him always being fed sitting up with an elevated feeding chair and constant monitoring. So, just send him some prayers right now please.
